Pulmonology

Lung Health

If you or a loved one have difficulty breathing, you may need to visit a pulmonologist. Pulmonology focuses on the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of lung and respiratory system diseases. The earlier you seek treatment for these conditions, the better your chances are for early diagnosis and long-term treatment options.

Pulmonologists treat various lung conditions, including:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Emphysema
  • Lung cancer
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Lung fibrosis
  • Sleep disorders

At St. Croix Health, our pulmonologists provide comprehensive lung care services, including on-site lung function testing, also called pulmonary function tests. For patients with chronic lung problems, we can enroll you in our Respiratory Therapy program.

Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs)

A PFT assesses how well your lungs work. These tests can tell you and your provider how much air your lungs can hold, how quickly you can move air in and out, and how well your lungs can add oxygen, and remove carbon dioxide from the body.

Lung tests are not painful. There are many different types of tests that can be recommended depending on the symptoms you are experiencing. These tests can help your provider diagnose lung conditions and what the effects may be if not treated. This is vital information that is needed for both you and your provider when deciding if treatment is necessary.
